After a few days at the Lemos household in Atibaia, Rachel and i went with Fabio, Gustavo, Denise and Carlos to their beach house, about 4 hours away. We ended up staying 4 nights at the beach, doing all the normal things you do at the beach, but doing it the Brazilian way.
This is the 2nd leg of the journey..... check out the first post in Atibaia, second leg at the beach, and the third leg in Sao Paulo.
The beaches in Brazil reminded me of the coast of Maine, with mountains right near the coast. There were also little islands that were basically mountains in the ocean a few miles off the coast. (If that makes any sense) I was told that it would probably be nice in the mornings and early afternoon and then it usually storms in the late afternoon most days. This prediction proved to be very accurate…. a storm seemed to roll in every day at about 4, rain for a little while and it would be nice the next day. If I haven't mentioned it before, where we were in Brazil is 3 hours ahead of east coast time. So for example, it it was midnight in Brazil, it was 9 pm on the east coast, and 6 pm in California.
Here a few lessons I learned at the beach in Brazil.

Here a few lessons I learned at the beach in Brazil.
1. Most men are wearing Speedos. It will take you by surprise the first time you witness it.
2. Many women wear bathing suits that cover less area than most American swimsuits. I don't think I have to elaborate on that one.
3. People are selling food, drinks, and shirts on the beach. Guys will come by selling coconuts and if you order one, they hack open the top of it with a huge knife right in front of you, put a straw in it and hand it to you. Guys are walking around selling ice cream as well, and we even spotted a guy carrying a t-shirt rack and selling shirts off it. It didn't look like all the shirts were the same, so I'm wondering if he was just carrying around his wardrobe, hoping someone would offer a fair price for one of his shirts.
4, Brazilian pizza is strange, but good. It is similar to our pizza, but with different, random toppings. We had 4 different kinds and the toppings ranged from green olives, (but just 1 green olive, right in the middle of the piece) deli turkey breast, bacon, and cheese.
5. Brazilian food just keeps getting better. For dinner, we had their version of beef stroganoff and a seafood pasta on 2 consecutive nights.

At the beach, Fabio and his family were very good friends with everyone who lived in their community. One of his dad's good friends, Reginaldo, is a police detective in Sao Paulo. He was over one night and through Fabio translating, told us how he would take his iPad to work with him and record some of the things he saw. Now, if this were to happen in the United States, I'm pretty sure there would be riots. He showed us a video of the police busting into a drug dealer's house, and after the dealer wouldn't talk, the police just started kicking this guy. "What?", I said. "If this happened in the US, there would be riots." He had probably a thousand videos, some showing all the confiscated drugs, others with him sitting in the passenger seat of the police car with the sirens on, and a couple of his partners arresting people.....all on his iPad.
On the fourth day, we took a car ferry over to a nearby island for the afternoon. The morning was rough, with an early wake up call after Fabio and I stayed up watching the AFC and NFC championship games that night. The ride over zig-zagged all along the coast, taking us past a few awesome views of the ocean from the island and then hopped on the ferry for a 30 minute ferry ride over to the island of Ilha Bela. The plan was to pay to hang out at a hotel for the afternoon, using all their amenities. Right by the water, there were beds under umbrellas to lay under. You want to talk about living the dream, because it doesn't get much better than this. We hung out at this hotel, had sushi in the afternoon and did some serious chilling before heading over to a nearby waterfall.
Right before we arrived to the water, I was told that the mosquitoes were awful here. Ok, I thought, I will just double or triple the amount of bug spray I put on and everything will be fine. I found out quickly that this wasn't quite going to cover it. Someone actually owned the waterfall and with it being privately owned, we had to pay to use it. Luckily for us, they had their own bug repellant. It was in a huge water jug, and I'm almost certain that it was just straight citronella oil. Yea, like the ones you burn on sticks to keep the bugs away, except we were expected to just rub it right on your skin. This seemed a little excessive to begin with, but after a few minutes, I found out that these bugs weren't joking around in the least bit. After spending a solid 5 minutes making sure citronella oil was covering our whole bodies, we got into the water right by the waterfall. No one quite knew what to do at the waterfall, so we just got beneath the waterfall and let cold water hit us violently for a few minutes, because that's what you do at a waterfall, right? Yea, that's what you do, just agree with me, okay.
Before we walked over to natural water slide, these bugs started to eat us alive. Come on man, we had citronella oil on us, who the hell are these bugs. Rachel and I were bitten about 10 times, and these bites hurt and itched for the next week. Never in my life have I experienced getting eaten alive.
After this slight discomfort and more citronella oil, we walked over to the water slide. This water slide was a natural one and we saw a few people slide down before any of us went. It looked pretty simple.... you start from the top of the rock on your butt, push yourself to get started and then follow the path that has been curved out by the water down into a larger pool of water below.
The last few pics are how we looked sliding down the rock. This seemed great and all, until the craziest guy of all-time went down the slide. This random guy walks over to the top of the slide and starts splashing water all over the rocks and has one of his friends lay about halfway down. He clears everyone out of the way and walks back about 10 yards from the start of the slide. This dude takes a running go, slides on his butt over the hump and his friend and in mid-air, makes it on to his feet. He rides out the bottom half of the slide on his feet and then cuts a flip into the pool.
We made it back to the condo about 2 o'clock that night after dinner at a restaurant in a local shopping center. Fabio and I met a guy on the ferry on the way home later that night who proved to be quite entertaining, who was clearly out to have a good time. We hung out on the beach for a few hours the next day before heading on to Sao Paulo that night to experience the Brazilian city life. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for part 3 of the Brazil posts.
